Okay, if Elizabeth hadn't worn that corset in the first movie, here's what would have happened: - Elizabeth wouldn't have passed out on that sea wall thing and would have been completely aware of Norrington's true feelings (I don't think she completely got the gist )
- That medallion thingy wouldn't have fallen in the water and (whoosh!) summon the pirates.
- Jack Sparrow wouldn't have saved Elizabeth(in one out of very few of his chivalrous moments), so she would have no motive to save this miscreant, and he would have been hanged, much to the sadness of fangirls everywhere.
- Will Turner would be a lonely, regretful blacksmith for the rest of his pitiful existence.
- Will Turner would not be immortal.
- Various girls that Jack angered would never get VENGEANCE!
- Barbossa would be curse forever. Yup, that's it.
- Davy Jones would have his debt payed, eliminating any remnants of the plot of the later two movies.
- Davy Jones would not be dead.
- James Norrington would not be.......OH, IT'S TOO PAINFUL! *sobs*
- The Kraken would still be living his happy little cephalopod life.
- Gibbs would probably be adopted into that group of pigs he was sleeping on.
Finally, and most importantly: WE WOULD NEVER KNOW HOW AWESOME NORRINGTON'S HAIR IS!!!! So, corsets are life changing torture devices.

Why in the world does this page contain advertisement for knitting yarns/yarn shops, even if yarn is yummy?
And yes, it is very interesting how corsets are life changing things.

So the new question is: Are corsets a good or a bad thing?

There was a nice looking ad for sixteenth century clothing that the reenacter in me couldn't resist! Gosh, I'm such a nerd. Save me! No, wait, don't save me!
In response to your question, corsets, or stays, are actually made not to make the waist look smaller, but to support the back and allow posture. So, in Elizabeth's case, it was laced way too tight! People would wear corsets all the time back in the day.

According to this Wikipedia article, the main purpose of corsets is actually to shape the body, as I've heard multiple times before. I'm not totally opposed to them, but I don't care for the idea of some of the health risks.
