On Tuesday, April 20, 1999, two friends were eating their lunch on a grassy hill. The students, Rachel Scott and Richard Castaldo were approached by two men with shotguns. The men shot her in the leg and torso, and then asked her if she believed in God.
Knowing what would happen, Rachel responded, "You know that I do."
She was killed instantly.
Richard was hit eight times, but managed to get away with his life, although he was badly wounded.
The gunman then entered the school and the library, where Cassie Bernell was hiding underneath a table. The gunmen slapped the table, then shouted, "Peek-a-Boo!" Once again, they asked a victim if they believed in God. She answered "Yes."
Cassie was killed by a shot to the head.
The gunmen moved on. Valeen Schnurr, who had been shot in the chest and arms yelled out "Oh, God help me!". He asked her if she believed in God, and she floundered in her answer, saying no and then yes, trying to get the answer "right". He asked her why; she said it was because it was what her family believed. He taunted her then walked away.
In the entire event, 12 students were killed, 1 teacher was killed, and there was 23 wounded, not counting the suicides of the two shooters.
This incident is known as the Columbine High School Massacre.
Rachel and Cassie were killed because they answered "wrong" according to the gunmen, while Valeen was saved because she answered "no".
The band Flyleaf has written a song to honour these two heroes. I don't care what you believe, these girls were heroes. They didn't jump in front of a bullet, all they did was tell the truth. And I believe, along with Flyleaf, that these two girls need to be honoured for not being afraid to express their beliefs.
Here is the song, and I have posted the lyrics below it. You don't have to listen to it, or even read the lyrics if you don't want to, it is your choice, like when Rachel and Cassie responded "Yes".
So here it is, the song "Cassie" in memory of Rachel and Cassie. Keep in your mind, would you have the guts to say "Yes"?
The question asked in order
To save her life or take it
The answer no to avoid death
The answer yes would make it
Make it
Do you believe in God
Written on the bullet
Say yes to pull the trigger
Do you believe in God
Written on the bullet
And Cassie pulled the trigger
All heads are bowed in silence
To remember her last sentence
She answered him knowing what would happen
Her last words still hanging in the air
In the air
Do you believe in God
Written on the bullet
Say yes to pull the trigger
Do you believe in God
Written on the bullet
And Rachel pulled the trigger
How many will die
I will die
I, I will say yes
Do you believe in God
Written on the bullet
Say yes to pull the trigger
Do you believe in God
Written on the bullet
And Cassie pulled the trigger
(Do you believe)
Do you believe in God (Do you believe)
Do you believe in God (Do you believe)
Do you believe in God
And I will pull the trigger
